As of 2001 government regulations require that any person seeking to purchase firearms or inherit firearms must have a  valid Possession Acquisition Firearms Licence. The Possession Acquisition Firearms Licence will also allow you:

bulletPurchase Ammunition
bulletObtain a authorization to transport

In order to acquire a Possession Acquisition Firearms Licence you must successfully complete an Possession Acquisition Firearms Licence (P.A.L). training course or successfully challenge a government approved P.A.L. test.

"Without a Possession Acquisition Firearms Licence, an individual will not be in legal possession of firearms and will not be able to purchase ammunition. We do not wish to see anyone inconvenienced and thus we are encouraging people to take action immediately."

The Possession Acquisition Firearms Licence Course is a basic Firearms Safety Course. It is designed to give the student overall background information about safe firearms handling and familiarity with the laws and procedures regarding firearms ownership in Canada.
